The short answer

There is no single verified monthly price for keeping a cat in North Macedonia. Our worked example allocates 1,308 MKD to 30 days of dry food and litter, using explicitly assumed quantities. Starting with empty cupboards, the same example requires 1,860 MKD at checkout because food is sold in whole bags. Neither amount is a complete cost-of-ownership budget.

Prices and online availability checked on 11 October 2026. These are named retailers’ advertised examples, not a national average or a guarantee of stock. Delivery, veterinary care, equipment and sitting are excluded unless stated.

01

Start with what your household actually uses

Food and litter are repeat purchases, but a shopping receipt does not always describe one month. A bag bought today may last into the next month; a carrier bought once should not be charged again in every monthly estimate. Keep two columns: cash paid and the value of supplies used.

Record the product, pack size, purchase date and what remains after 30 days. If you already have supplies, count them as opening stock. This avoids a cheap-looking month simply because you bought a large bag the month before. Use your cat’s established feeding plan and product instructions to set quantities; the arithmetic below is a budgeting illustration, not a feeding recommendation.

Which local prices can you use as reference points?

The following products were available to order online when checked. Product types and pack sizes differ, so the table is a list of purchasable examples rather than a quality ranking. Confirm the exact variant and current price before ordering.

A 30-day food-and-litter calculation

Assume, only for this calculation, that a household uses 60 g of the listed dry food per day and two 5 L bags of PETFAN litter during 30 days. The litter quantity is an assumed refill total, not a required replacement schedule. Different cats, trays and products will use different amounts.

Food used is 60 g × 30 = 1.8 kg. At 460 MKD/kg, that is 828 MKD. Litter is 2 × 240 = 480 MKD. Together, the supplies used are valued at 1,308 MKD.

If you start with none of these supplies, you must buy two 1.5 kg food bags, costing 1,380 MKD, plus the litter. Checkout is therefore 1,860 MKD before delivery. After the assumed usage, 1.2 kg of food remains, worth 552 MKD at the same unit price.

Example only. No wet food, treats, healthcare, equipment or delivery included.

How should you budget for wet food?

Calculate it as its own shopping line. At the observed 399 MKD for seven 70 g cans, each can costs 57 MKD. A hypothetical purchase of 14 cans costs 798 MKD for two packs. This tells you the shopping cost, not whether that amount meets your cat’s nutritional needs.

Do not compare a kilogram of wet food with a kilogram of dry food as though they deliver the same diet. Nor should you simply add the illustrative dry-food quantity above to wet food. Use the quantities appropriate to the actual feeding plan, then multiply each by its unit price. Our separate cat-food-label guide explains how to compare the product information.

Why does the litter budget change?

A five-litre bag is a volume, not a promise that it will last one month. Tray dimensions, the number of trays and cats, topping up and the product’s instructions all affect buying frequency. Record how many bags you actually open during the month.

The two listed litter products use different materials. Their prices per litre make pack costs easier to read, but do not prove equal performance or equal monthly consumption. Avoid treating litres as kilograms, and compare the total cost after observing your own refill pattern. Keep a small reorder buffer so running out does not force an urgent delivery.

06

What else belongs in the budget?

Separate initial equipment from repeat purchases. A carrier, suitable litter tray, scoop, bowls and scratching surface belong in a setup list. Replacement equipment, toys and cleaning supplies need their own line when you actually buy them.

Veterinary visits, prescribed products and care during travel are separate commitments. Ask a local vet for the relevant planned-care quotation and keep unexpected costs outside the food-and-litter subtotal. For time away, agree how many home visits are needed, what each visit covers and any key collection or travel charge before booking. A sitter’s advertised visit price is not automatically a full holiday price.

  • Monthly: actual food, litter and regular consumables.
  • Occasional: healthcare, replacement supplies and home visits during travel.
  • Upfront: safe transport and the equipment needed at home.

Compare the whole order before choosing a shop

Ask two or three pet shops for the same product name and pack size. Check stock, expiry date, delivery charge, collection options and whether an offer requires a multipack. A lower unit price can still require more cash today or more storage than you have.

Opavce advertises free delivery for orders above 1,990 MKD. That is an example of an order condition, not a reason to buy unnecessary items. For a basket below the threshold, ask the delivery price and compare it with collection or the same basket elsewhere.

Use Fluffinn’s pet-shop directory to compare local contacts. Send the exact shopping list and ask for a complete current total. Read the cat-food-label guide alongside this one when choosing between products.

Your quick checklist

  • Write the exact food and litter variants and pack sizes.
  • Use actual 30-day usage, not a guess based on bag size.
  • Separate supply value used from whole-pack checkout spending.
  • Confirm stock, expiry, delivery and any promotion conditions.
  • Keep equipment, veterinary care and holiday visits as separate budget lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1,308 MKD enough to keep a cat for a month?

It is only the food-and-litter subtotal in our stated example. It assumes 1.8 kg of one dry food and two 5 L litter bags, and excludes other needs. Your quantities, products and care costs may differ.

How much does cat litter cost in Macedonia?

The checked examples are 240 MKD for 5 L of PETFAN bentonite at Opavce and 850 MKD for 5 L of Sanicat Diamonds silica at Pet Shop Sirena. These are different products, not the lowest and highest prices in the market. Monthly spending depends on actual use.

Does buying a larger pack always save money?

Compare price per kilogram or litre, but also consider checkout cost, storage, expiry and whether your cat already uses that product. A large purchase is not a saving if a substantial amount goes unused.

Should I add wet food to the dry-food example?

Only after adjusting quantities to your cat’s actual feeding plan. The 14-can calculation is a separate shopping example, not advice to feed wet food in addition to the dry amount.

What should I ask a pet shop before ordering?

Ask for the exact variant, pack size, available stock, expiry date and final total including delivery. If the product is unavailable, confirm any proposed substitute before paying.
